Training while sick

September 3, 2008 by Jen Waak

I’ve been sick for the past several days — but I didn’t realize until today, when I started feeling better, just HOW sick. In the past 5 days I’ve been to a music festival for 2 10-hours days, spent another full afternoon trekking on Mt. Rainier (where I got caught in the rain and snow wearing shorts), then two more on the water up in the San Juan Islands. My friends finally put me to bed last night at 9. I don’t know if it was the 12 hours of sleep or the cold/allergy meds, but I finally woke up feeling like myself. WOW!

During all of this, I insisted on continuing my kettlebell training. I ended up taking yesterday off, as I was simply non-functional, but other than that was really consistent. My training sessions were AWFUL during that time, but I did them.

As I said, I’m feeling MUCH better today, and I had a FANTASTIC training session tonight. I started with some simple mobility, then did a bunch of ligament work on my shoulders in preparation for my snatches. I followed it up with 30 snatches on each side with the 12kg, which was a PIECE OF CAKE. Lastly, I finished up with 100 swings (only one hand switch). Short, sweet, and to the point.

I have a funny feeling that the GREAT session tonight was a function of having a rest day, feeling better, AND the fact that I slogged through those super-short sessions while I was sick. Although, in hindsight, I’m trying to decide if I would have been better off skipping the sessions while sick. Something I will never know.

On a nutrition note, while I’ve had company and been traveling, I’ve been remarkably good about my nutrition. I only have two meals I’d take back if I could (both of which while I was feeling my worst). I’m quite pleased with my continued progress.

A 5-hour kayaking voyage tomorrow!
