Finding unconventional ways to train

August 31, 2008 by Jen Waak

After stating that I know what I need to do to get my snatch numbers up, it was time to do what I said. I knew I’d have a challenge on my hands, as I have a friend visiting, and the upcoming week is PACKED with activities.

Yesterday morning I snatched the 16kg, and I didn’t write it down at the time, and no longer remember, but think it was around 20 per side. Both my hands and shoulders were toast. So, we modified the plan, and decided that I need to get my shoulders accustomed to that volume, so am going to spend this week snatching with the 12kg. 30 reps/side — just like the snatch test (but with a lighter weight). I did that twice today — first thing this morning, and now just again (midnight).

The unconventional side of my training comes during the day. I spent the past two days at Bumbershoot, the huge music festival in Seattle. It’s 10 hours/day on my feet, walking around, standing, and a little bit of sitting. While we were standing or sitting listening to bands, I’d use the time to work on Z. I’d do some muscle isolation work (that was great while lying down during Lucinda Williams), a few drills, bone rhythm, or whatever I could figure out to do without drawing (too much) attention to myself. It may sound silly, but the muscle isolation stuff really worked — my movement today was much smoother since I was able to engage muscles I hadn’t been able to previously find.

I managed to do a great job on the food, too. I avoided all of the junk, attempted to count calories, and drank no beer. I spent hours in the beer gardens with my friends, but didn’t take a sip. I have another 2 1/2 weeks, and there is no room for error right now!

Mt. Rainier again tomorrow. Can’t wait!
