Breathing
November 27, 2007 by Jen Waak
Breathing is something we all take for granted and it’s an autonomous activity (well, most of the time). But, the past few days it’s been a topic near and dear to my heart. I got sick over the holiday weekend, and have a nasty head cold, so breathing has been a challenge. I also had an appt with Dr. Cobb, and breathing was the key item on my agenda (I had learned from helping proof the T-Phase manual that I have many of the symptoms of chronic hyperventilation — talking fast, having to stop and take deep breaths, insomnia, nightmares, sleepwalking). The fact that I live in Seattle is fantastic!
Seeing Dr. Cobb is always a fascinating experience for me. I’ve learned to not leave out what I consider “inconsequential details”, because it really is “all the body all the time”. What is wrong is rarely (if ever) what I think it is. So, I listed everything out — the significant lack of right ankle dorsiflexion, pain during left hip rotation when in a right lunge, tweak in the left back during left lumbar circles. I threw it all out there and let him do his thing. We then did a review of my breathing, and a couple of drills. We retested. My ankle dorsiflexion was significantly improved. My hip rotation was about twice as much. And my SI (having just gotten off a plane after 4 days in Vegas — ’nuff said) went from a 2 to a 3. From BREATHING. I did my drills today, and my ankle is still doing great, if not getting better. Hip rotation is good. All of the improvements have remained in place.
I just love this stuff, and can’t wait until I-Phase in January!
