Eat Right

Nutrition has the unenviable position of being the most-discussed and least-understood component of physical well-being.

berriesEveryone knows that consuming more calories than you burn leads to weight gain (and vice versa), but the quality and appropriateness of the food for you is also incredibly important. Making incorrect nutrition choices for you can lead to body-wide inflammation, feelings of being bloated, migraines, chronic pain, and other physical ailments. For most people, high carb, low protein diets are pro-inflammatory.

Weight Loss

If your goal includes weight loss, we’ll find the right diet for you.

We start by keeping a food diary of how you are eating now — your eating schedule, when, where, quantities. Then, compare that to your lifestyle and figure out what we need to keep and what can go.

Then, we slowly change your eating habits. I know a lot of people find it easier (in the short term) to change over everything while they are “on a diet.” But, what happens after that? They resume their old eating habits, “but this time they know better.” No, you don’t. Only by slowly modifying your CURRENT eating habits can you permanently change your eating habits so you stop yo-yo dieting.

Food Allergies

Eight foods account for 90% of food allergies in the US: milk, eggs, peanuts, treenuts, fish, seafood, shellfish, soy, and wheat. If you suspect a food allergy, the easiest thing to do is to eliminate it for two weeks — if you feel better, you know you have a food intolerance or food allergy. If there is no change, then you can resume eating it. Don’t assume that just because you tested fine for it a few years ago or you eat it all the time that you can’t be allergic. Common foods are actually the most common allergens.

Food Delivery

Not having time to cook or shop really isn’t an excuse any more — particularly here in Seattle. You can get pre-prepared organic meals both fresh and frozen, for pick-up or delivery. If you are willing to chop a few veggies, there are countless of organic produce delivery options and farmer’s market.

Pre-prepared organic meals

Eat Local – Local, organic pre-prepared breakfasts, lunches, dinners, desserts, and sides — at very reasonable prices and in different portion sizes to meet most family requirements. They have a store at the top of Queen Anne, are opening one in Burien soon, and also deliver. I just tried them for the first time, and will be going back often. The store is definitely a treat.

Delicious Planet – Fresh (non-frozen) meals delivered to your door Monday-Friday. They will also freeze entrees for stocking up if you ask.

Organic Produce Delivery

New Roots Organic – New Roots has a special place in my heart — because they are located at the end of my block (talk about local) and because owner Carolyn has been willing to work with me on substitutions for the foods I don’t care for. The prices are just as good, if not better, for comparable produce at the markets, it’s fun to get new and different things to branch out, and Carolyn puts a lot of time and effort in to getting GREAT produce for her baskets. She also includes recipes in each bin using some the included foods to help jumpstart your cooking.
