Learning my limits

July 11, 2008 by Jen Waak

Since getting back from 9S, I’ve taken a more serious interest in my own training — actually interested in trying to find my own limits. Smarter training means I can train more often and progress more quickly.

Right now I’m working on a few different things: Press the 20kg bell (44lb), do a pistol, bodyweight pullup. And, of course, pass my snatch test (I recertify in September).

Tonight, I started with some Z — just loosening up what felt tight, did some bone rhythm squats.

Since I want to get the 44 up, I decided to start with cleaning the 53. I cleaned it on each side, 5 reps (another first for me). Now, I could repeat that with the 44 — which was a piece of cake because the body no longer considered getting a 44 up as a threat. Next, was trying to press it. It still didn’t go up on either side, but it was a WHOLE lot closer. I’m guessing another week or two and it will go up.

Snatches tonight started with the 36. I managed 60 reps — which is my RKC recert requirement. I did require more than one hand change, but now know that I can get through it. I still have two months to get my grip strength up and hands conditioned, so I’m no longer worried about my snatch test. I then cranked out another 40 reps with the 26, just for some additional work. So, 100 reps — yet another first.

At this point, the upper body was done, but I finished up with some body weight squats, front squats with bells racked, and then some pistol work using bands.

In all of this, I focused on good form, always stopping as soon as I hit a bad rep. I put down the bell, walked away, shook it off, and then went back. I just can’t afford to chunk bad reps.

Tomorrow is hiking with the puppy. :-)
